This Week in AI
The King of AI and the Queen of Sleep announced this week that they are collaborating on Thrive AI Health, a personalized health coach that helps people meet their health and fitness goals. The AI bot will use personal biometric, lab, and other medical data (that you’ve shared with it) to make tailored health recommendations that focus on changing ‘microhabits.’
Today’s data is the rocket fuel for tomorrow’s AI. Companies with the most unique and valuable data are best placed to win in the long term, using AI to unlock value in that data, create customer value and new services, and elevate employee performance. The high value of proprietary datasets has led to a rapid rise in the use of AI bots to scrape data from websites. Cloudflare’s free new tool prevents bots from scraping data hosted on its platform.
A BBC investigation has revealed a network of Russia-based websites masquerading as local American newspapers that pump out fake AI-powered stories designed to target the upcoming U.S. election. The risk of disinformation and misinformation is one of the biggest stories of our time. AI is a powerful tool that scales human efforts. Both good and bad. Be careful what you believe, and always check your facts.
Want to hear your next audiobook narrated by Burt Reynolds, James Dean, or Judy Garland? You’re in luck! ElevenLabs has added a new set of celebrity narrators to its stable. The company sought and received permission to do so from the estates of the deceased Hollywood stars who will presumably receive royalties.
Video: Why Nvidia, Tesla, Amazon, and more are betting big on AI-powered humanoid robots
CNBC reports on the rise of humanoid robots, safety concerns, cost projections, the robotics arms race with China, why automation is key to addressing the growing labor shortage, and how the latest advances in artificial intelligence are shaping the future of robotics. The report showcases robots from Figure, Apptronik, Tesla, Agility Robotics, and others. (17 mins)
Tesla is arguably the world’s biggest robotics company.”
AI Tech and Innovation
A new French AI startup, Kyutai, has announced an open-source speech AI model similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o. The AI, known as Moshi, runs on a 7 billion-parameter multimodal model known as Helium, designed to run locally or offline on devices rather than needing to be hosted in the cloud. The model is highly responsive with very low latency and has the ability to handle two audio streams simultaneously, which allows it to talk and listen at the same time. Watch the launch keynote here.
One of the main technical challenges to scaling AI systems is shuffling vast amounts of data between CPU and GPU clusters. Long a pioneer in the field of silicon photonics, this week Intel showcased a new chiplet for optical interconnects that can be packaged alongside a CPU or GPU. Optical interconnects hold the potential to boost data transmission speeds while reducing power consumption. Intel claims the new chiplet can support 64 bidirectional channels of 32 gigabytes-per-second data flowing through up to 100 meters of fiber optic cables.
A new study published in the June edition of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering evaluates the quality of code produced by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Results show a range of success in writing functional code, from less than 1% up to more than 80%, depending on task difficulty.
AI Insights and Analysis
“The idea that superintelligent robots are alien invaders coming to ‘steal our jobs’ reveals profound shortcomings in the way we think about work, value, and intelligence itself.”
An AI researcher formerly at Google Brain pens a thoughtful and thought-provoking piece on the value of collective intelligence, the power of cooperation in evolutionary history, AI agents, our worries about artificial intelligence dominating us, and what the deployment of robots says about how society sees the people they replace. The conclusion: “We’re all in it together - human, animal, plant, and machine alike.”
While millions of people have tried ChatGPT, most of them have yet to find ways to use it in their daily lives. Companies are trying many AI pilots, but few have put generative AI into production. Industry commentator Ben Evans muses on whether AI is ready for prime time, argues that LLMs are a technology and not a product, and asks what it will take to find a true product-market fit.
